Here are some quick tips on common men fashion mistakes in rapid fire succession. Enjoy
Overalls – Clothes that don’t fit right
Baggy clothes make you look fat and clothes that fit too tight make you look fat (think ‘muffin top’ for women in tight jeans) and in general conveys that you don’t take care of the details. Go for clothes that fits well for your body type and of that cut. Generally for mass produced clothings its usually cut for the ’standard’ or ‘classic’ size so if you are the average build good for you, for those who are of the slim or boxy variant you’ll have a harder time finding clothes that fit in the general shops. You will have better chance of getting better fitting clothes at designer shops or get a tailor to work on some bespoke clothes for you. The main takeaway is to get a fit for the moment and not after you lose a few pounds.
Head – Boring hairstyles
Changing hairstyles is the easiest way to change your look without costing much of the amount pay regularly. Look up some Men’s magazine and try on a new style and see it fits your look. If you start to get grey have, try subtle highlights or hair dye to liven things up and if you are loosing hair in the middle, shave it like Moby and not try to hide it with what’s left of the strands you called hair. Balding is not a choice but choose to go bald is, don’t be a victim of circumstances. Or at least get a cool hat …..
Face – Keep those facial hair in check
The hair on your face should be in orderly manner and its the first thing people notice. Keep a clean shave or trim accordingly with no wild hair sticking elsewhere. Trim your nose hair and get a pair of tweezers to pluck the hair in between your eyebrow, you don’t want the Grouch uni eyebrow look. Once in a while go for eyebrow trim / waxing.
Ears – Get the right pierce
They say men who wear earings are prepared for marriage, they know jewellery. Simple piercings like silver studs are good enough but keep it to a minimal in workplaces. If you are not sure if its a good idea, get the magnet on ones.
Neck – Unless you are gangsta, lose the bling
A cool necklace adds character to what you are wearing, pick a simple necklace that represents or tells a story about yourself. Avoid the chunky blingy stuff that says ‘I am an attention whore’. I personally have a cool Swarosky crsytal cross from Prague that my mom bought for me on her trip which I get alot of comments from and get to tell my story. Nice
If you are the button up type, for a casual look a slim tie would go well the chill lounge look. Save the standard ties for office wear.
Hands – too much metal
Unless you are an extra cast for Pirates of the Carribean or a rock star, limit yourself to a nice watch and a nice distinctive ring that carries a story just like the necklace mentioned earlier. The watch straps should match your belt colour but usually most people won’t pay attention to it so don’t get to hard up on it. A metal bracelet would be a safer choice and goes well with any clothing article. Gold watches is old fashioned (unless its a Rolex which say somethings else), go for stainless steel or silver metal.
Fingers – trim those digits
Always keep your nails in check – short, neat, clean and please don’t give me the Manchurian finger nail utility excuse to dig your dark crevices. For advanced metro guys, no harm trying manicure.
Upper body – Wearing too many colour / patterns / prints or a combination of those
The rule of thumb is to stick to the basics, the most you can have have is a combination of of 2 to 3 colour patterns at the same time. Anything more than that and you are going to the edgy zone. Pick colours that complement and wearing a patterned article with a solid piece. Having too much colours and patterns will make you look busy and lack of a congruent look. To get a colours that complement, check out a colour wheel online on what colours go well with each other.
Waist – Belts that don’t match
Always match belts with your shoes, black leather belt goes with black leather shoes and should be of same quality and style. The only exception will be casual wear where canvas belts and nylon shoes are involved, those you can go crazy over. Also avoid huge chunky belts with cheesy branded logos, you don’t want them to focus on your midriff do you? (Or maybe you do… oh well
) A simple dressy leather belt can go well with most pants / jeans. And please, no handphone pouch/cradle on the belt!
Pants – MC hammer’s in the house
Wear jeans and pants that fit well and shaped according to your legs. Its OK to buy jeans that a little too tight on the waist as jeans will stretch over time and use. Jeans and pants length should not be rolled up unless you are making a fashion statement, always hemmed it to the right length with an inch gap in between the base of your feet in socks according to Evisu. Like shirts, always wear jeans thats to your body cut. For slim guys, slim bootcuts work very and for average built with broad shoulders would go well with straight relaxed fit. Baggy pants are out unless you are a rapper from the 80’s.
Socks – Always match your socks too
For the most part, match your socks with the pants colour you are wearing. If you go Italian style, match your socks with your shoes. For formal look, always have long lenght socks so that you won’t expose your skin when you raise your leg. Not classy at all. For casual look, either you go for short or sockless.
Shoes – Keep it clean, and wear the right one for the right occasion
Have at least two pair of shoes to rotate in every 2 days so that it allows your shoes to breath and not be warped by the body heat from your feet and everyday use. Use a high quality wooden shoe tree to keep your expensive leather shoes in shape. Always have a killer pair of dress leather shoes for the formal occasion to go with the nice suit you are wearing. A white pair canvas Converse or Pumas will go well with jeans for the casual occasion.
Skin – Tattoos
Tattoos are cool if you think long and hard about it and not jump into it while in a drunken stupor like some lady. Never tattoo your girlfriend or wife’s name on it. You might live to regret it. No trends tattoo, imagine you have a logo of Macintosh from the 80’s, soooo yesterday. Pick a pattern that is durable and be meaningful in your life even t when you are 80.
Thats all for now, don’t make the mistakes most guy make and have fun looking good.
