Wish my wardrobe was this complete.....
Generally most men are clueless on what they should have in their wardrobe besides the typical shirt, pants, socks and underwear and never really give a thought about it. Recently I have been phasing out my past ‘life’ (unenlightened geek wear) items and been rebuilding back my wardrobe since last year. Trust me, it will take awhile to build a good wardrobe but here’s some tips to start you off having the basics right.
Dress shirts – these are your typical workhorse which you where daily to work (if you are in an office environment) and assuming 5 days a week affair. Get at least 10 piece of shirts so that you can rotate each week while you wash/dry clean the other 5 for the next week. If don’t wash your shirts that often, wear an undershirt and hang your shift immediately after you take it off. Typical work shirts should be basics cotton of white, light blue or grey with minimal patterns so that it can match well with any pants you have. Always long sleeves unless you work in an engineering firm or fast food joint.
Sports shirt – also known as casual shirts, you should have at least two in safe colours of white, black or grey for your weekend outing of for semi-formal occasions such as events or dinner dates. If possible, try to avoid clothes that requires dry cleaning for your basic wear shirts.
Pants – for work pants, start of with at least 3 to 4 pairs in solids of black, navy or grey. As pants are rarely noticeable than shirts, you may wear it a couple of times in a single week rotation. Just make sure you don’t have an obvious meatball stain from your last lunch break.
Jeans – I am a denim fan and definitely go by Se7en jean’s motto of everyone should have 7 pair of jeans in their wardrobe, but for beginners go for a single good pair of blue jeans that fits you well and it will go with almost anything in your wardrobe.
Belt – You should have 2 belts, one a dress leather belt for your work or formal occasions and a jeans leather belt with a nice buckle for the casual wear outing.
Underwear – Boxers and / or briefs, nuff said. No banana hammocks please, it needs more support than you think it is.
Suit – Have a single great navy, black or charcoal 2 piece suit off the rack that the best amount you can afford for those rare formal occasion or business meeting. This will be your power suit and make sure it goes well with a nice pair of dress leather oxford shoes.
Shoes – You should have at least 3 pair of shoes, a dress leather laced oxford shoes for formal occasions, a nice pair of canvas Pumas / Vans for the casual or occasion sports and a pair of slippers for the beach or relaxed stroll.
Once you have the basics nailed down, you can practically mix and match for any occasion and be ready for it. On the next article I will show you how to add stuff to build your basic wardrobe to the next level. Until then, keep on stylin’.
