Men’s style a myth? The psychology explained

From geek to great, if that includes blue spandex

“Clothes make the man. Naked people have little or no influence on society.” - Mark Twain

I’ve been pondering at this heavy topic for awhile and it occasionally pops up in popular man’s fashion and style forums/sites such as GQ, Askmen, Esquire, etc. and how we humans have evolved from fig leave wearing neanderthal to sophisticated runway beefcakes (or stickmen depending which end of the food chain you are at).  Through the ages clothing plays an important role in defining a man’s social standing, and he took pride in what he wears. In a century where we are spoilt for choice by the media, MTV, celebrities, trends and  sub-cultures, men started having fashion amnesia and not dressing according to their age due to the disconnect with the following values:

Attack of the clones?

Attack of the clones?

1. Status: why we wear and what we wear symbolizes our social standing. We are subconsciously wired to recognize status by taking visual queues and quickly sizing up people in less than 3 seconds. So first impression does matter alot and difference between opening new opportunities or getting the cold shoulder. Somehow people will treat you better and pay more respect just by dressing abit better everyday.

2. Self esteem: what we wear is a conscious manifestation of our inner self, and it says alot about how well you take care of yourself by the way you carry yourself, the clothes you put together, the theme, style, accessories and attitude. By simply dressing better, you feel and exudes confidence.

3. Identity: as men, we are brought up culturally and historically to ‘fit in’ and be part of the family/tribe. Unlike our womenfolk who will will be very upset if she discovers someone else is dressed the same as her in the same party, men who would be more than happy to ‘fit in’ like the rest. This is counterproductive and as men, we have the innate desire to be unique without being labeled as a try hard / freak show.

The key point to bring home is to build a style that is congruent to yourself and in line with your mission/purpose in life. Notice that men with directions in their life tend to be more consistent with what they wear and how they carry themselves. If you do not have one, try emulating some of your favorite celebrities or lifestyle to start with and check out some advice on how to build a wardrobe, avoid common fashion mistakes and armed with this knowledge…. go shopping for some new clothes! Till next time again, keep on stylin” and comment on your thoughts below. ;)

Thank you for dropping by! Yes those brands you’ve mentioned are popular highstreet brands over here in the UK. I highly recommend H&M (better than Topman IMO) and Uniqlo (clean, basics at affordable prices).. sadly Malaysia don’t have such brands but you can get Uniqlo in Singapore instead! I’d like to do a write up on highsteet brands however I know a fellow blogger who’s been doing a great job at it and am an avid reader.. check out Zamri’s Big Fat blog at http://zabigfatblog.blogspot.com/ . I am pretty sure he does a better (and bigger) job.

Good day Jason. hm…. i support your blog and you asked me to look at other people blog. Why not you do better then him. :) He probably don’t eat pork or drink wine. On top of fashion, why not you blog about wine, Champagne, good ham or good chesee? SinceYou you are in London, wine champagne are much more cheaper then Malaysia. With your sophistication and your blog, we will surely learn a lot from you.
